Swine Flu in Canada

The number of confirmed cases of swine flu in Canada increased to 13 on Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

Also on Tuesday, Canadians were urged to avoid unnecessary travel to Mexico as an official travel advisory was issued. On a voluntary basis even Air Transat a major tour operator postponed new flights between Canada and Mexico.

Ontario, confirmed its first four swine flu cases in York and Durham Regions. Alberta now has two cases. British Columbia which previously reported two cases now said it now had three. The last four are in Atlantic Canada. “Thankfully all of these cases have been mild,” said Federal Health Minister Leona Aqlukkag.

Canada has also increased screening of people returning from Mexico.

The swine flu outbreak originating in Mexico will present some problems for Canadian ESL English schools as about 15% of the 200,000 international language students travel from Mexico starting in May during their summer break.

To the best of our knowledge none of the private language schools have on-staff nurses or emergency medical screening procedures. Many are just crossing their fingers and hoping for the best.

If you are a parent or student and have concerns - do not be shy - ask questions.

Just to give some rules of thumb - 20 students in New York came back from Mexico with swine flu symptoms - the school one week later now has 400 cases - now all cases were mild and no one has died - however - the situation does require active monitering.
